Garden to Table overview

June 22, 2018 By Tania Savage

Every Wednesday Room 2  either does gardening or cooking for GTT (Garden to Table). Jenny our kitchen specialist helps our cooking whilst John deals with the gardeners. Each session we get given a few skills to learn when we are cooking or gardening. This week we made curry and rice to go with it and last time we made baked potatoes with hummus. Afterwards, we gather together and share the meal we have just prepared. In the garden we have planted Rosemary, Garlic, Spinach, Lettuce and Silverbeet. I really enjoy this programme as it prepares us for when we grow up. When we started GTT we got donated some start-up food to help us before we make a garden. We are all really looking forward to have our own garden to grow our own produce in.

Every Wednesday Rm2 does garden to table, we all split into 2 groups . One group is the kitchen  and in the kitchen we have our kitchen specialist Jenny . she helps us prepare the food and show us the skills we are going to learn . The other group is the garden group . our garden group specialist is John . He helps us with planting and growing .  The garden to table program is a programme for kids to learn how to grow, harvest prepare and share . The skills that we are learning this week is how to hold a knife properly and how to chop and not cut your fingers off . One thing about garden to table I’m excited about is making the garden and preparing the design .

What is GTT?

Well, GTT stands for Garden To Table! If you are wondering what it is-It is a programme to help kids grow closer to the environment (excuse the pun). Also we work together as 2 groups, one for garden, planting etc. and the kitchen group collects the plant cooks them up and serves them! Usually we make savory meals and they taste pretty good! When we work together we really can make a good meal. We try to make it with stuff we can grow because that is the point of GTT but that’s hard to sometimes do. It is worth doing it in the end. So join GTT for some easy meals to impress your family!

Every Wednesday Room 2 & some year six’s from Room 1 gather together and split into 2 groups.  One of the groups are in the kitchen cooking, the other group does gardening. We alternate every week. For the kitchen group there is this nice lady called Jenny who helps us in the kitchen and sometimes Estelle helps us too! For the gardening John (Nell’s dad) helps us with that. We plant some really cool stuff. At the end of the garden to table section we set up chairs and tables and decorate it with plants to make it look pretty, and then we all eat together!!!

Every Wednesday Rm 2 and some other year sixes from Rm 1 all gather together and split up into 2 groups. 1 group does cooking with Jenny our kitchen specialist, and the other does gardening and learning about gardens with John. At the end both groups join together to share and eat what the first group cooked. While group 1’s food is cooking, they decorate the tables with leaves and branches. It is great to grow, harvest, prepare, share with our school. Each person has learned new words and skills. The good thing about the dishes/food that each group make is that it’s vegetarian which is good for our body systems. Garden To Table is a community for people to recycle/reuse objects. Also Garden To Table is a part of time where people can come together and share a meal. Garden To Table is a great programme for our school.

At 9:15 every wednesday morning we do GTT (Garden to Table). Every week our groups alternate between gardening and cooking. We have learnt how to chop with a knife and be safe around soil and much MUCH more. Garden to Tables motto is grow, harvest, prepare and share. Which means we grow fruit and vegetables, we harvest them, we cook with them and we share what we’ve cooked on tables that the cooking group has set up. I think that GTT is really fun and a great way to learn. I am really looking forward to building a garden to plant all our fruit and vegetables.

Garden to table is so fun because you get to eat the food that we make. We do Garden to table every week on Wednesday, we also take turns going into the kitchen. When we go into the kitchen we make food out  of what either we grow or people bring in. We have been doing Garden to table for 2 weeks now and I think it is good. The skills that we have learnt will also help us in the kitchen when we are older. I am looking forward to starting our garden because it will be really good for us R2, the school environment and the next students to come into this class.
