Pink Shirt Day

May 18, 2018 By Tania Savage

Cardinal McKeefry School joined in with many other schools and organisations across New Zealand in celebrating Bully Free Week NZ through Pink Shirt Day.

The origin of Pink Shirt Day is explained here: https://www.pinkshirtday.org.nz/about/

On Pink Shirt Day we ask New Zealanders to Speak up and Stand together to Stop bullying.

Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new year 10 student was harassed and threatened for wearing pink. David and Travis bought dozens of pink shirts and distributed them to their male classmates to wear the next day. The word got out online and hundreds of students showed up in pink, some from head-to-toe, to stand together against bullying.

We’ve been celebrating Pink Shirt Day in New Zealand since 2009 and the campaign grows stronger and larger every year.

Pink Shirt Day is led by the Mental Health Foundation, with support from: The Peace Foundation, RainbowYOUTH, InsideOUT, New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association, Youthline and Family Works.

William Pike Challenge Walk

May 17, 2018 By Tania Savage

William Pike Challenge Walk

As the clock struck 9:00 the expectant whispers filled the air,

everybody was excited about the walk.

No sooner had we left had the chatter started up like a hive of angry bees and Hugh’s dog.

Everybody was thinking the same thing where were we heading? Were we all going to make it?  What would we hear ,and what would we see?

Further and further we traveled until we could walk no more then we came to eat and rest.

After we had rested and eaten we started the walk back to school.

When we entered the bush we decided to take the long way back but we soon regretted it.

Soon the others were lost to shadows as I ran to catch up I heard Lucas shout out  to take the stairs at the time I didn’t know what that meant but I soon found out.

I came to a crossroad one path leading up and one straying to the side I didn’t know what to do then I remembered what Lucas said so I decided to take the path leading up and stepped out of the bush.

William Pike Challenge walk

The whispers of excitement filled the classroom air.

Shaky knees, expectant eyes, determined bodies  just ready to fly.

All out the door, onto the road, through the muddy park and down the dark road.

Where are we going? What will we see ?

Can we all make it ? Or will we all bleed ?

Further and further, stumbling along, looking and listening,

birds singing their song.

Upwards and downwards, children all moaning.

On to the footpath and cars are just groaning.

Down the stairs, up the hill,

around the ponds to the tranquil chill.

The clashing of stones while flicker is splashing,

the rustle of water while children are panting.

Back where we came, fighting through the pain,

Up the loop, the almighty troop.

Together we did it, relieved and exhausted,

Muscles all sore and ready to snore.

Cardinal McKeefry School Playground Refresh

May 11, 2018 By Tania Savage

Donate via Givealittle

We are a small school in the heart of Wellington. Because of our proximity to Otari Bush and Ian Galloway Park our school playgrounds are regularly used by our wider community. We love this and want to ensure our playgrounds remain both safe and challenging so that the whole family can enjoy.

Our larger playground is only 10 years old but is really showing signs of wear and tear. With only 77 students it is hard for our PTA to raise the $15,000 to replace the parts of both playgrounds. Please support us to continue to provide a wonderful play space for the Wellington Western Suburbs and wider community to enjoy.

We will be purchasing replacement parts such as new flying fox, cargo nets and ladders. We will also be replacing the wooden decking on both playgrounds. Should we exceed our target we will use the excess to install shade cloths over both playgrounds.

Our Famous PALS Leaders

May 7, 2018 By Tania Savage

Last year Sport Wellington visited to create a video about the PALS programme they helped us to implement as part of our commitment to being a SportStart School. We love how this has enabled our tamariki to develop the skills of playing games together that all ages of our school can enjoy. A special thank you to our 2017 Year 6 students who star in this video, Miss Wylie who has supported this initative and Georgina Duindam from Sport Wellington.

Pals (Physical Activity Leaders)

Intro

The Year 5s and 6 students have been learning how to be a Pal which is a physical activity leader. We have learnt how to run our own games for the younger students. One team will running a game on Monday and Wednesday at lunchtimes when the library is closed. The younger ones can join in at lunchtime and play a fun game. The aim of Pals is to give year 1-4s a opportunity to start playing games by themselves. – Ananyaa

How it works

Pals is a great way to teach the year 5 and 6s thing like teamwork, leadership, communication and motivation. Pals is a great way to give the year 1-4s something fun to do at lunchtime while the pals team learn how to be good leaders. All in all it’s a great way for everyone to have fun whether your playing the game or leading it. -Maddy
